| 7 | ca 1862-1890 | CSS VIRGINIA (IRONCLAD RAM: 1862); USS MONITOR (IRONCLAD: 1862); USS MINNESOTA (STEAM FRIGATE: 1855-1901) | CHESTER; PENNSYLVANIA; UNITED STATES | CHESTER - PENNSYLVANIA - UNITED STATES - Artist; HAMPTON ROADS - VIRGINIA - UNITED STATES - Related Place | SHORT DESCRIPTION: Oil painting on canvas by Alexander Charles Stuart. The painting depicts the battle between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia on March 9, 1862. The steam frigate USS Minnesota is at the right and the masts of the sunken USS Cumberland are in the background at the left. NOTES: Stuart worked around Philadelphia at the time and shortly after the Civil War. His paintings definitely would have been contemporary to the events, but he may not have been an eye witness. Alexander Charles Stuart was born in Scotland June 2, 1831, and died in Chester, Pennsylvania on August 3, 1898. He was educated in Glasgow and later at Rugby School. After studying medicine Stuart joined the Royal Navy, and later the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, and is said to have served in the iron armoured ship Monitor. He married and settled in Chester, Pennsylvania, then in Wilmington, where is is listed in the town directories from 1881 to 1883 as a marine painter. He is best known for his ship portraits, especially the ships of the firm of Harlan & Hollingsworth. NOTES: [Lois Oglesby, 2/22/94] This painting was executed close to the time of the event and likely to be accurate. INVENTORY: frame - there is one (1) component part. SPELLING NOTE: MERRIMACK, MERRIMAC - According to a letter from the office of The Secretary of the Navy, W.R. Furlong, Acting, dated August 31, 1937, the correct way of spelling the name of this vessel is MERRIMACK. The Bureau of Construction and Repair recommends that all labels of models adhere to this manner of spelling. The official position of the United States Navy is that this vessel was named for the Merrimack River in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and was correctly spelled with the terminal "k". | 1950.0559.000001A |
